Lotto Hessen chief calls for tougher enforcement against Germany's illegal online gambling black market
By The Weekly Edge desk ·
Summary
Martin Blach, head of management at Lotto Hessen, says German gambling rules mean little without firm enforcement against illegal operators. He says the black market is mainly online and that Lotto Hessen's licence for virtual slots carries 60 pages of additional conditions. He notes that the GGL puts the black-market share at about 23 per cent, while other studies suggest over 50 per cent. He cites a recent raid in the Rhine-Main area, where five suspects allegedly took illegal online stakes of €5.8 billion between July 2021 and the end of 2023.
Why it matters
Licensed operators face strict conditions while enforcement against the predominantly online black market remains a concern.
