Sun International unveils responsible gambling charter with new advertising restrictions

By The Weekly Edge desk ·

Summary

Sun International has published a Responsible Gambling Charter covering its online and land-based businesses, built on player education, player protection, ethical marketing and staff training. It commits voluntarily to keeping adverts off-air from 6am to 8am and from midday to 6pm, and to devoting 10% of gaming ad content to responsible gaming messages, even though South Africa currently has no watershed rules. The CEO tied the charter to board oversight and executive targets, and urged enforcement against illegal operators and tax and regulatory settings that keep players in the licensed market.

Why it matters

Sun International's voluntary advertising restrictions, adopted without South African watershed rules, may become a benchmark for operators and regulators on responsible gambling.
